The Challenge

When Pakistani Hindu migrant families arrive in Rajasthan, their children often face profound educational disruption. Language barriers, lack of documentation, and the trauma of displacement can make entering the Indian school system an overwhelming hurdle.

Our Response

In partnership with Children's Hope India (CHI), SLS UJAS established the Asha Kendra in the Anganwa Settlement of Jodhpur. This center acts as a critical bridge—offering Early Childhood Education (ECE) and intensive remedial learning to integrate these vulnerable children into mainstream education.

126 Enrolled Students (Nursery to 8th)
46 Remedial Students
20 Remedial Hrs / Week
4 Dedicated Teachers

Stories of Resilience

Aarav (10 Years Old): Aarav came to our sessions extremely quiet and withdrawn. Through consistent exposure to creative tools like "Colour Your Feelings" and cooperative games, he began to participate. A breakthrough came during an emotion-based role-play activity where he confidently acted out "happiness." He now regularly engages, laughs freely, and encourages quieter children to join in.

Heena (UKG Student): When Heena first joined, she was extremely shy and struggled with both English and Hindi. Through regular practice and personal attention, she now reads short sentences, writes neatly, and speaks with confidence. Her progress is a proud moment for her parents and a testament to dedicated teaching.

Ishawar (8 Years Old): Arriving from Pakistan, Ishawar only spoke Urdu and was very withdrawn. In just two months at Asha Kendra, he has learned to recognize English and Hindi letters, remembers daily vocabulary, and is mastering two-digit addition. He is slowly finding his voice in a new country.

School Refurbishment

The Challenge

When families are uprooted from across the border and migrate into the harsh desert terrain of Jaisalmer and Bikaner, they lose more than homes—they lose routine, identity, and the foundation for their children's future.

Our Response

In partnership with the India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF), UJAS launched the Growing Futures project to invest in the soul of these communities. We refurbished and ran central schools in 5 regions of Jaisalmer, transforming them from a row of silence to a trauma-sensitive space of curiosity.

This intervention goes beyond primary education. There is a quarterly frequency of activities pertaining to water usage awareness, sanitation and cleanliness, health and hygiene, and planting trees. As part of this drive, sanitary napkins were distributed among young girls and women of the area along with the knowledge and awareness required to use them mindfully.
